If It's Good Enough For Me ...

Occasionally I have heard bosses rely on the excuse that "if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for you".  This simple expression encompasses a multitude of fallacies.

  • The boss' needs are at least as high as the workers.  Does the boss need a really good soldering station?
  • Everyone has the same needs.  Does the boss need a chair that is as good as one used by someone with chronic back problems?
  • Everyone has the same values.  Does the boss, who perhaps no longer has children at home, value a flexible work schedule as much as people with small children?
  • The boss is more important than everyone else.

If you feel the need to say this, I encourage you to consider these fallacies and address the root issues properly.  Even if you think they are true, it sends a toxic message.

Great post! I think that people's needs are based on their skill level in that specific area. For instance, when training horses more advanced trainers will have a preference for a specific type of rope, but for a beginner who is still struggling with handling a rope it really doesn't matter what type of rope they use.
